Shanta studied Biological Sciences at the University of Oxford, where she explored the impact of stress on the size of eggs among Blue Tits. In 2004, Shanta started a Masters in Oceanography at Southampton University, looking at the relationship between melting glaciers and egg size in the brittle sea star, Ophionotus victoriae. After spending a year studying marine sediment biogeochemistry at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology, she worked as a science and environmental journalist for the BBC, New Scientist, Guardian and the science journal Nature.

Shanta joined Blue Ventures in February 2011 as a field scientist based in Andavadoaka where she is responsible for training volunteers and coordinating research.
