Manager Mangrove REDD+ Project Development

Toliara, Madagascar

Kate is responsible for overseeing the development of Blue Ventures mangrove REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation plus other measures to restore, enhance, and conserve carbon stocks) and sustainable financing projects in west-central and southwestern Madagascar. Kate joined the Blue Forests team in August 2012 - her work includes conducting feasibility assessments, coordinating community engagement in planning and monitoring, developing forest carbon documents for southwest project sites, and facilitating partnerships for mangrove ecosystem service conservation.

Kate graduated with an MSc in Conservation Biology from the University of Cape Town in 2010, where she studied the feasibility of conservation at an unprotected estuary in the coastal province of Kenya. She is passionate about implementing conservation plans based on sustainable, market-based incentives which contribute to coastal development and wetland conservation. She is also an avid birdwatcher and interested in the use of waterbirds as flagship species for coastal communities in Africa.
