A unique voice linking blue carbon and coastal communities

A unique voice linking blue carbon and coastal communities

At the end of September, four Blue Ventures team members attended the 8th Meeting of the Blue Carbon Initiative’s Scientific Working Group, in Zanzibar, and presented what we’ve learnt through our Blue Forests programme.

zanzibar-conferenceWith a specific focus on the potential of blue carbon in Africa, this 3 day meeting brought together 23 world experts in blue carbon science, 43 representatives from the African coastal carbon research community and regional decision makers to assess the current state of the knowledge surrounding blue carbon ecosystems and to identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for collaborations that will accelerate research in the future.

Madagascar was well represented, with members of WWF-MWIOPO and the Ministry of Environment also attending.

This meeting was the first of its kind in Africa and recognises the growing interest in blue carbon as a tool for coastal management within the region. Our presentation provided a unique voice on the link between blue carbon and coastal communities, demonstrating how blue carbon can act as an incentive and funding mechanism for community-led mangrove conservation and restoration.
