Too Big to Ignore‘s e-book, Small-Scale Fisheries in Africa: A Regional Portrait, uses case studies to explore the landscape of Africa’s small-scale fisheries and presents the current challenges they are facing.

From Egypt to South Africa, the regional case studies illustrate the diversity of Africa’s small-scale fisheries and how they differ between sub regions of the continent. Blue Ventures has contributed a case study from a traditional octopus fishery in southwest Madagascar.

In this area of Madagascar, the Vezo people – a traditional seafaring semi-nomadic community – have relied on the ocean for generations as their main source of livelihood. However, they are now on the frontline of the increasing challenges of climate change despite having done little to contribute to it.

In order to ensure the sustainability of their fisheries, these communities (supported by Blue Ventures) are developing opportunities for local governance and alternative livelihoods, establishing locally managed marine areas (LMMAs), collecting ecological data to inform fisheries management and engaging with national networks to build resilience to shocks and assert their rights.
