Influential development leader appointed as the new Chair of Trustees at Blue Ventures

Megan Elliott, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Marie Stopes International, is taking the helm at Blue Ventures as its new Chair of Trustees, developing the organisation to achieve its goals, make the most of opportunities, and to govern and lead the Board. She joins us at a critical moment in our efforts to scale up community-led marine conservation and deepen our impact.

Jonathan Katz, who led our board for nearly a decade, passes the baton to Megan. Jonathan has used his strategic business experience to steer us through a period of significant growth.

Jonathan said, “My time leading Blue Ventures’ ambitious plans and growth has been remarkable. It has been an honour to see, first-hand the impact the organisation is having on improving the lives of small-scale fishers in the tropics. I’m hugely proud to have played a part in that change. Megan’s in-depth knowledge and experience are perfectly aligned with Blue Ventures’ own compelling work and she’ll be a huge asset to this dynamic organisation.”

Responsible for setting strategic direction and engagement at Marie Stopes International, Megan also led on securing financing across the charity’s global partnerships. Currently she leads the operations and security of projects across 32 countries in Africa and Asia. For 15 years, Megan has been designing and delivering social market and service delivery programmes across a complex range of health areas.

As an international health sector leader, Megan brings deep expertise in working to deliver strategic health programmes in Africa and Asia. This experience complements our work to listen to communities and provide community-led health care services to unlock conservation capacity.

Stints living in Uganda, Tanzania, the US and Europe have grounded Megan in working across contexts and with different communities to enable people to fulfil their full potential.

Megan Elliott said, “I’m delighted to be joining an organisation that is motivated and driven by listening and responding to the long term needs of communities. Blue Ventures’ person-centred approach chimes with my own experiences living and working collaboratively with communities around the world.”

“Those who live around the coastal tropics need urgent support to meet the new challenges they face, Blue Ventures’ practical solutions to protect their marine environment, build livelihoods and improve their health pack a powerful punch.”

Alasdair Harris, Executive Director of Blue Ventures, welcomed Megan, saying, “Blue Ventures is privileged to have Megan join our team at such a crucial time for marine conservation. Her passion for driving positive change in the lives of communities will give our organisation and those we work with a great ally in the face of the climate crisis.”

“The stakes have never been higher for the future of small-scale fishers who live around the world’s tropical coasts to build their resilience, develop alternative livelihoods and build their capacity to meet their needs in a fast-changing world. At this pivotal moment for the world’s coastal people, and the future of marine biodiversity, Megan’s strategic aptitude and expertise will ensure that Blue Ventures redoubles its efforts to support communities to catalyse community-led marine conservation.”
