New resolutions for PHE in East Africa

New resolutions for PHE in East Africa

The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) in partnership with Knowledge for Health (K4Health) project and Population Reference Bureau (PRB) hosted a two-day regional Population-Health-Environment (PHE) Symposium in Entebbe, Uganda, on the 27th-28th of September.

This event brought together over 90 PHE implementers, policy makers, development partners, and community representatives to discuss the main theme of “Enhancing Resiliency and Economic Development through Strengthened PHE Programming”.

Thanks to the generous support of PACE, Blue Ventures was able to attend this important event and promote our new presence within the East Africa region.

Blue Ventures has been implementing holistic PHE programmes in Madagascar for over ten years, and is now building on that to exchange learning and experiences with the East African PHE community.  Through valued partnerships and reciprocal learning relationships, Blue Ventures has begun to engage with organisations and communities in Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique.

The symposium was a valuable opportunity to meet other PHE practitioners and learn more about the regional PHE context. The insight gained and connections made will enable us to build up effective partnerships for sharing experiences and collaboratively strengthening the PHE movement in the region.

The main topics discussed during the symposium included mainstreaming and scaling up PHE approaches to link with the SDGs, the urgency for more research on the added-value of these approaches, the importance to include youth in PHE programming, and the need to improve PHE communication and advocacy strategies.

The results of these discussions are reflected in the ten resolutions which were proposed and signed by the symposium participants. These resolutions would not have been possible without this event, and are evidence of the power of bringing people together. Now they need to be put into action by the collaborative effort of all state and non-state PHE practitioners in the East African region.
