Sustainably Managing Small-scale Fisheries in Partnership with Communities

Cripps, G (2015) Sustainably Managing Small-scale
Fisheries in Partnership with Communities in Blue Economy: Sharing Success Stories to Inspire Change, UNEP.

In southwest Madagascar, the beginnings of a Blue Economy are being built on the sustainable management of small-scale fisheries by traditional fishing communities. Blue Economy is the UNEP term for fair and sustainable ocean conservation management strategies that financially benefit fishing communities.

Seafood exporters, government and marine conservation NGOs have worked with Malagasy fishers over the last decade to establish locally-managed marine areas as the building blocks of this management process.

This is one of 6 case studies in the UNEP Blue Economy Report (2015), each of which present Blue Economy implemented at different scales and in different locations.
