20 Nov November 20, 2018 in Communications Coordinator - OutreachBristol, UKruth@blueventures.orgAs Communications Coordinator – Outreach, Ruth will be working alongside Blue Ventures’ in-country teams and the communities they work with, to develop more effective and locally-led communication of conservation and fisheries management projects. Ruth has a PhD in marine mammal ecology and a degree in Environmental Biology, both from University College Dublin, Ireland. She has spent the past decade developing research and conservation projects focusing on elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) and cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in various parts of Africa and Asia. She has interviewed hundreds of fishermen and women to collect information on rare marine species, thereby gaining a unique perspective on the lives of coastal people in developing countries. In recent years, she has become more interested in effective communication of conservation messages and research outputs to communities in the global south. Whilst running a research and education project on sawfish in Madagascar between 2015 and 2018, Ruth saw for herself the work of Blue Ventures in communities around the country, and got to know and collaborate with some of the local teams. Ruth is a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum, London. She likes to freedive, surf, take photographs and drink tea.
