Jaona received his master’s degree in plant ecology from the Faculty of Science at the University of Antananarivo. He first started working with Blue Ventures in 2013, when working on his master’s thesis, conducting mangrove stocks assessments.
From 2014 to 2015, he worked with Blue Ventures as a consultant contributing to all Blue Carbon activities. So he has been involved in many expeditions in mangroves on the west and northwest coast of Madagascar.
“Walking through and working in deep, smelly mud with hostile mosquitos for hours, I face it and look on the bright side, this work is becoming my passion. It is exciting and full of adventures and challenges. Working in the mangroves over the past three years has allowed me to see and experience more mangrove ecosystems, in particular the relationship between mangrove habitats and coastal communities, as well as improve my field research skills.”
In September 2016, Jaona was recruited as a Blue Carbon Scientist to be based in Ambanja. This role includes assisting with technical oversight of the BCS team, leading Blue Carbon Field Missions, leadership of Reforestation Monitoring and assistance of general BCS team activities.
He is now a Blue Carbon Sciences Manager based in Antananarivo.
