We rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities

Blue Ventures is an award-winning marine conservation organisation working to rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities. We’re committed to protecting marine biodiversity in ways that benefit coastal people. We work in places where the ocean is vital to local cultures and economies, and where there is a fundamental unmet need to support human development.

Summary Job Description

Blue Ventures in Maintirano is the promoter of the Barren Islands Marine Protected Area, which aims to preserve for future generations a maritime area still rich in fish resources and crucial for the sustainable management of fisheries in Madagascar. In order to manage the diversification of activities and the growth of the team, we are recruiting a Site Leader, who will work closely with the Midwest Regional Manager. The position offers an exceptional opportunity to engage an experienced general manager in marine conservation sector; in a critically important ecosystem.  The post holder needs to be able to hold a wide range of responsibilities, including supervision of the team, implementation of activities, coordination of field actions, contribution in strengthening our local work streams and building relationships with key partners and local authorities.

Blue Venture’s integrated approach in the midwest of Madagascar aims to support community-led conservation of marine resources  (and the fisheries they provide) through the development of locally managed marine areas. Activities include fisheries management measures, promoting local governance by the VMNB (Vezo miray nosy Barren) local fishermen association and supported by the development of improved community health through safidy Program.

The Site Leader will report directly to the midwest regional Manager, while working closely with national-level programme managers and BV headquarters in London. He/she will develop strong links with the wider BV team and expertise, and partnerships with diverse regional and national partners.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, proactive and organised individual, with strong management and leadership skills.  They will need to demonstrate experience in project cycle management, building partnerships and developing strategies. We would like to see experience in the development and/or conservation sectors.
