Charlie provides technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to ensure excellence and effectiveness in our support for community led fisheries management and conservation. After studying Marine and Coastal Ecology and Conservation Biology at the University of Plymouth, Charlie joined Blue Ventures as a field scientist in 2007. She has since conducted dive surveys along the west coast of Madagascar, established Blue Ventures’ second field site in Belo sur Mer (2009), supporting fishing communities to develop temporary mangrove reserves, and in 2011 led Blue Ventures’ first exploratory dives in the Barren Islands.
Charlie has conducted numerous research projects supporting work in Madagascar, Ghana and Mozambique. Charlie is a PhD student at the University of Exeter looking at the contribution of small-scale fisheries in Madagascar. Charlie is also an Honorary Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and an Edinburgh Ocean Leader.
Charlie loves how traditional ecological knowledge can advance modern science and likes nothing more than sitting learning about fish with fishers, being elbow deep in octopus ink or knee-deep in excel data sheets!
“Working for Blue Ventures is more than just a job. It’s a daily life experience working with truly inspirational people who achieve so much.”
