Sharon leads Blue Ventures’ work supporting local organisations working with coastal communities to take practical steps to rebuild their fisheries.
She has 25 years’ experience supporting grassroots and community led organisations, NGOs and government agencies to develop and implement policies and strategies for marine conservation, fisheries management and climate change adaptation. A Belizean national, Sharon started her career developing the coral reef monitoring programmes for Belize’s Sapodilla Cayes and the Port Honduras marine reserve. Sharon then held various positions at the Belize Fisheries Department and the Belize Audubon Society, the country’s oldest conservation NGO, before joining the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) in 2003. At PACT, she served as Senior Projects Officer, Grants Programme Director, and ultimately Executive Director, managing conservation grants programming and securing new funding for climate adaptation. She also served on several national and regional boards, including the Meso-American Reef Fund (MAR Fund) and the Latin America and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC), the Debt for Nature Swap Oversight Committee and the Social Investment Fund.
From 2012 to 2020, Sharon held senior government positions, including Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Natural Resources, where she was responsible for lands, water, mining, and solid waste management. She later served as Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Rural Development, Local Government, and Labour. During this time, she also acted as the operational focal point for the Global Environment Facility for three years, coordinating GEF allocations in Belize. Additionally, Sharon served as an advisor on the Prime Minister’s Economic Development and Policy Team, was a member of the Covid-19 national response task force and the Executive Director of the Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust.
As Blue Ventures’ Chief Partnership Officer, Sharon supports colleagues and partners across 13 tropical coastal countries, applying her deep sectoral experience to empower coastal communities and small-scale fishers to rebuild coastal fisheries and sustain their livelihoods.
