Dr Vik Mohan

Director of Community Health
Exeter, UK

Dr Vik Mohan is a practicing GP based in Exeter, with a passion for marine conservation and reproductive health. He is the medical director of our Safidy community health programme, and the architect of our integrated Population-Health-Environment (PHE) approach.

Having developed expertise in dive medicine, Vik started working with BV as a medical advisor in 2005. While supporting our expeditions team in southwest Madagascar, his medical perspective and interest in reproductive health led him to uncover a huge unmet need for basic health services and family planning. Having established that local communities and partners were happy for BV to increase access to basic health services in the region, he opened the Velondriake area’s first family planning clinic in 2007. After the overwhelmingly positive response to this first clinic, he developed the service into what is now a comprehensive health programme covering 40 villages across the Velondriake area. This programme has also been replicated in the Belo sur Mer area since 2013 and the Barren Isles since 2015, now serving over 25,000 people along Madagascar’s western coastline.

In his part-time role as BV medical director, Vik oversees all clinical aspects of our Safidy community health programme and advances our efforts supporting partners to learn from our experiences of integrating community health promotion into local marine conservation initiatives.
