Edinburgh Ocean Leaders (EOL) is a new leadership programme for exceptional ocean professionals, which this year, welcomes Blue Ventures’ Head of Monitoring and Evaluation, Charlie Gough.
The programme, hosted by the University of Edinburgh, aims to have a lasting impact on the health of the ocean by accelerating the leadership, influence and reach of early-mid career professionals working in marine conservation.
EOL provides distinct leadership support and training for each new cohort throughout the year, while also supporting activities for growing an established network of ocean changemakers. Through the programme, this network of leaders will have the opportunity to enhance their transformative leadership capabilities, complex problem-solving skills, and international reach and influence through collaborative action.
Charlie’s experience in developing community-based data collection methods and data visualisation systems which have been used by communities across twelve countries around the world has carved out her place in this year’s prestigious cohort of ocean leaders. Having spent seven years living and working amongst small-scale fishing communities in southwest Madagascar, Charlie holds a deep understanding of community needs, and uses her experience to empower communities to sustain their marine resources, whilst also protecting the ocean and its environment.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be selected as one of this year’s Ocean Leaders. The opportunity to connect with the other Ocean Leaders, each of whom is driving change in their sector of Ocean Conservation is fantastic. I am looking forward to seeing ocean challenges and solutions from their perspectives as much as I am looking forward to growing in my own leadership.” – Charlie Gough
She is joined by five fellow Ocean Leaders working to improve the health of marine environments and build the resilience of the communities who depend on them. Representing various sectors in marine conservation, both in the UK and around the world, the cohort works across fisheries, marine pollution, and education, as well as at multiple levels of governance and policy. This year’s cohort will help to shape ocean solutions for the future and distribute their diverse range of expertise across the world’s oceans.
