Blue Ventures is thrilled to welcome new board members to join its Board of Trustees to further strengthen the organisation’s governance. The new cohort, chosen for their broad expertise and experience, take up their seats in July 2021.
Blue Ventures’ Board of Trustees supports and oversees the work of the organisation. Trustees’ role is to be ‘guardians of purpose’, making sure that all decisions put the needs of the mission and our beneficiaries first. The new trustees share Blue Ventures’ values and a passion to help the organisation to achieve its mission, to help coastal communities to thrive through marine conservation efforts that both rebuild fisheries and protect ocean life.
The new members to join the governing body are Mialy Andriamahefazafy, Zoe Averill, Ian Barry, Susan Crowther, Peter Everett, Stuart J. Green, Mark Lomas and Caroline Lovelace.
The new trustees come from diverse sectors including strategy, marine science and policy, human resources, finance, audit and risk management, to create a highly effective multi-stakeholder board that will be able to serve the needs of the organisation and the communities it serves.
John Wareham, acting chair of trustees at Blue Ventures, said, “The current Board of Trustees is pleased to welcome new members to guide our leadership and bring fresh perspectives to the Board. Our new members will help to steer Blue Ventures in its ambitious plans to support the resilience of coastal people and their efforts to protect marine ecosystems.”
Dr Mialy Andriamahefazafy, a specialist in Indian Ocean fisheries and new member of the Board said, “As a Malagasy researcher and advocate, I am thrilled to join Blue Ventures board and help with this part of Blue Ventures journey. At a time where the ocean is high in the global agenda, blue justice and equity for coastal communities need to remain a key priority. Blue Ventures can play a pivotal role in achieving this.”
Stuart J. Green, a fisheries scientist and new member of the Board said, “I’m delighted to join the Blue Ventures Board and help support Alasdair and the whole Blue Ventures executive and country teams in executing and scaling their cutting edge vision for empowered coastal communities across our blue ocean planet.”
Alasdair Harris, Blue Ventures’ executive director, added, “Blue Ventures is privileged to have such an accomplished Board of Trustees, eager to play their role in helping Blue Ventures to meet the ocean emergency. Our Trustees bring a breadth of knowledge from diverse sectors and geographies, and their insights will be critical as we seek to accelerate our efforts to catalyse community-led marine conservation.”
The new members of the Board of Trustees include:
Dr Mialy Andriamahefazafy is a researcher and a fisheries governance specialist. She has more than 10 years experience in Madagascar and the Indian Ocean. Originally from Madagascar, Mialy focuses on the link between regional and global policy and local livelihoods. She is also a trustee of the International Pole and Line Foundation.
Ian Barry is a finance expert with nearly 30 years experience in financial management having served as finance director of Oxfam GB and chief financial officer of CAB International. He has served on the Department for International Development’s audit committee.
Stuart J. Green is a marine science and policy practitioner who has lived and worked in Asia-Pacific fishing communities for 30 years. Through Blue-Green Advisors Ltd, he specialises in advising on collaborations and strategy around the nexus of conservation, biodiversity, and livelihoods. His work continues to catalyse impactful partnerships between conservation donors, implementers, and communities working to improve the beautiful, socially, economically, and ecologically significant marine resources of our blue planet.
Caroline Lovelace is a former head of internal audit for the global conservation organisation, WWF. She is an experienced auditor and qualified accountant having worked in central and local government as well as the charitable sector.
