Our pathway to rebuilding fisheries and restoring our oceans starts with a steadfast commitment to upholding and strengthening the rights of coastal and fishing communities. That is the vision underpinning an exciting new partnership between Blue Ventures and Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.
Arcadia has awarded Blue Ventures a grant of $2.5m to support our core operations over the next five years. This vital support reflects our shared commitment to scaling up human rights-based approaches to marine conservation, to enhancing ocean governance, and to taking action to eliminate destructive fishing practices.
“We are thrilled to be embarking on this new partnership with Arcadia” said Blue Ventures’ Executive Director Alasdair Harris.
“At a time when overfishing, pollution and climate breakdown are draining our seas of life, and threatening livelihoods for hundreds of millions worldwide, this timely support will enable us to scale, strengthen and sustain locally led approaches to marine conservation.”
With Arcadia’s support, we will expand our work into West Africa, and provide urgent support to scale up inshore exclusion zones, building on recent successes in the Western Indian Ocean.
We will also drive forward our global advocacy efforts to defend the rights of traditional fishers and safeguard marine life, including our work to address issues around destructive industrial bottom trawling in coastal waters.
“Curtailing destructive fishing practices is key to ensuring a future for the world’s coastal communities and ocean floor ecosystems. At the same time, it will protect important blue carbon stores, helping global efforts to mitigate climate breakdown” said Annie Tourette, Blue Ventures’ Head of Advocacy.
“This grant from Arcadia will bolster our work as part of a growing global movement to uphold the rights of small-scale fishers, while addressing destructive fishing practices and other key drivers of the ocean emergency.”
Arcadia is a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin that supports charities and scholarly institutions that preserve cultural heritage and the environment. Arcadia also supports projects that promote open access and all of its awards are granted on the condition that any materials produced are made available for free online. Since 2002, Arcadia has awarded more than $910 million to projects around the world.
“We are excited to embark upon this new partnership with Blue Ventures, an organisation at the forefront of efforts to address the ocean emergency” said Simon Chaplin, Arcadia’s CEO.
“In the face of global biodiversity and climate crises, Blue Ventures’ important work is helping to safeguard and restore our oceans, sustaining healthy and resilient marine ecosystems for generations to come.”
Background
Blue Ventures is a world-leading marine conservation organisation working to rebuild fisheries and restore ocean life. In 2003, we started with one community in southwest Madagascar. Today, we are working in more than a dozen countries across the tropics, protecting over 16,080 km² of vital ocean habitat and impacting the lives of more than 750,000 people. We’re also spearheading an ambitious new global coalition demanding an end to destructive bottom trawling in coastal waters.
