Experienced fisheries campaigner Prudence Wanko Nono – Djiodio will run operations across West Africa
Blue Ventures is delighted to announce the appointment of Prudence Wanko to the role of West Africa Director.
Wanko has more than 20 years of experience developing and managing initiatives to address critical humanitarian and environmental issues. She most recently served as the West Africa Regional Coordinator for Greenpeace in Senegal, helping the organisation to set up its operations and advocate for sustainable fisheries management in the region.
“Blue Ventures stood out to me because of its commitment to putting fishers first: ensuring that fishers tell their stories, share their knowledge, lead in taking care of their resources, and primarily benefit from these resources for their food security and livelihood” Wanko said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to take on this role and work with colleagues across the coastal tropics and in the UK to drive forward Blue Ventures’ mission of rebuilding fisheries with coastal communities.”
Commenting on the appointment, Blue Ventures’ Executive Director Alasdair Harris said: “Prudence is an established leader with oceans of experience in the fisheries sector and in human rights-based approaches to conservation. A Cameroonian national, she has a deep understanding of West African nations and exudes a passion for using data to empower coastal communities to restore ocean life.”
Delivering through partnership
Blue Ventures made a significant commitment to the region in 2022 when it announced the establishment of a new base in West Africa focusing on priorities identified in its “Thriving Fishers, Thriving Oceans” strategy.
Wanko’s appointment will help advance many of these initiatives, including securing and developing partnerships with communities, community-based organisations, governments and other NGOs in a vast region with a diverse set of priorities. She will lead, support, and help mentor a growing and diverse team, based in Dakar, Senegal.
“West Africa is one of the richest marine environments in the world, but unfortunately, small-scale fishers are not benefitting from these resources because of fisheries mismanagement and competition from industrial vessels,” said Wanko. “It is even worse for the women, whose main role in the sector is value addition, as they do not play a part in decision making. ”
“I also see way too many young people leaving in search of a better life while we have enough here at home. I want to help create a future where the local community is the first beneficiary of our marine resources,” she added.
Blue Ventures also recently appointed Gildas Andriamalala as its new director for Madagascar. Andriamalala was previously the Global Technical Advisor for Governance and Capacity Building.
