Aqua Lung will now be the exclusive supplier of diving gear used by Blue Ventures during their conservation expeditions along Madagascar’s coasts and elsewhere.
“We are very excited to be partnering with such a respected name as Aqua Lung,” said Richard Nimmo, managing director of Blue Ventures. “Aqua Lung equipment is known for its reliability, high performance and ease of maintenance, and will be vital in our work to protect coral reefs and other marine systems that face serious threats from climate change, pollution and destructive fishing practices.”
Blue Ventures is a London-based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to working with local communities around the world to conserve marine resources for the betterment of people and nature. Funded almost entirely through eco-tourism revenue, Blue Ventures brings paying volunteers to project sites and trains them in diving, scientific research, community outreach and on-the-ground conservation.
“We have worked with Blue Ventures for many years and are proud to now become their exclusive supplier,” said Peter Prince, managing director for Aqua Lung UK. “Blue Ventures is working to protect the incredible underwater habitats that divers and so many others rely upon.”
Aqua Lung is the name that first introduced the world to Scuba diving more than 60 years ago when Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Emille Gagnan developed the first “Aqua-Lung.” Today, Aqua Lung is the leading supplier of equipment for recreational, technical and military applications in more than 30 countries.
Blue Ventures’ main conservation site is located along Madagascar’s southwest coast in the remote fishing village of Andavadoaka. Blue Ventures has worked with village leaders for the past four years to develop conservation plans – including protected areas and alternative livelihoods – to protect the marine resources locals rely upon for survival.
Andavadoaka earlier this year won the prestigious UN Equator Prize for its work with Blue Ventures and others to develop community conservation projects.
In 2005 Blue Ventures became the first European organisation to receive the SEED Award sponsored by the United Nations and the World Conservation Union to find the most innovative and entrepreneurial partnerships for sustainable development. In 2004 and 2006, Blue Ventures received “Highly Commended” honours from the Responsible Tourism Awards. In 2006, Skal, the world’s largest organisation of travel and tourism professionals, named Blue Ventures winner of its International Ecotourism Award. And in 2007, Blue Ventures was named by National Geographic Traveler Magazine as one of the world’s “Top 50 Tours of a Lifetime.”
