The 60-minute programme will feature an exclusive interview with The Duke of Cambridge about his passion for the natural world and his involvement with the Tusk Trust. Prince William became a royal patron of the African conservation charity in 2005 and is a keen advocate of its cause.
The documentary will include coverage of the Tusk Conservation Award ceremony to be held at The Royal Society in London on Thursday 12th September, when The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will meet the five finalists and present the award in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the field of conservation.
The programme will celebrate the achievements of the Tusk Conservation Award finalists, including Dr Alasdair Harris’ pioneering marine conservation work with Blue Ventures. Since its launch in 2003, Blue Ventures has grown into a highly respected and influential marine conservation organisation dedicated to rebuilding tropical fisheries with the poorest coastal communities.
Blue Ventures has transformed how coastal communities in Madagascar relate to their marine resources, catalysing a sea change in sustainable fisheries management, nurturing lucrative aquaculture businesses and creating the largest locally managed marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean. The organisation’s innovative community-led models have guided national fisheries policy and been replicated by NGOs, donors and government agencies along thousands of kilometres of coastline.
“We’re thrilled that the critical importance of marine protection is being recognised in this way,” says Harris. “Being out of sight and out of mind, our oceans are all too often overlooked in the conservation debate. For the past decade our work has focused on supporting the local heroes of marine conservation in some of the most isolated regions of the Indian Ocean. We’re delighted that Tusk is recognising their courageous and visionary efforts in safeguarding our seas for the future.”
