We’re delighted to announce our partnership with Mission Blue – a global alliance devoted to exploring and caring for our oceans – to contribute to the Explore the Ocean layer of Google Earth.
Mission Blue is dedicated to inspiring a sea change in public awareness, access and support for a global network of Marine Protected Areas, stretching from the deepest ocean canyons to the tallest underwater mountain peaks, and from the most remote tropical reefs to the most lush coastal seagrass meadows. Their vision is to ignite support for a global network of ocean ‘hope-spots’ large enough to protect and restore 20% of the ocean by 2020!
Blue Ventures joins the global initiative specifically as a contributor to the Explore the Ocean layer of Google Earth, which is curated by Mission Blue. We are proud to use this unprecedented platform to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas (in our case locally managed marine areas) which collectively help save and restore these vital marine and coastal ecosystems; ensuring long-term livelihoods, reducing poverty, increasing climate-change preparedness and safeguarding biodiversity.
“We’re excited to partner with Blue Ventures, a science-led social enterprise that works with coastal communities to develop transformative approaches for catalysing and sustaining locally led marine conservation. They’re working with Google to pioneer online mapping tools and online resources including Google Street View for Madagascar; a project that is helping to raise awareness about environmental challenges faced by the Malagasy.”
