The Ocean Race Summit brings together ocean leaders and change-makers to share solutions and winning strategies to help restore ocean health. Hosted by The Ocean Race – a world-renowned team sailing race – this year’s Summit was streamed live from Newport, USA, on Wednesday 16th September, and included panel discussions, Q&A’s and ‘Action Lab’ sessions, enabling the participants to exchange ideas on ocean health.
The diverse group of over 200 ocean conservation experts attending the Summit included everyone from business leaders and policy makers to scientists and technicians, from athletes and skippers to environmental justice campaigners and ocean advocates.
In the panel discussion, ‘How do we build a healthy ocean for all?’, Blue Ventures’ Jen Chapman joined Michelle Bender of the Earth Law Center and Fatou Ndoye, Deputy Director of the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) (North America Office), to explore how to accelerate sustainable, nature-based and holistic solutions to protecting our oceans. As a Kinship Conservation Fellow and Blue Ventures’ Country Manager in Belize, Jen provided her knowledge of innovative, sustainable, market-based approaches to marine conservation, and shared Blue Ventures’ experience in establishing temporary octopus reserves and how these can catalyse conservation action, such as developing locally managed marine areas (LMMAs).
