Blue Ventures Wins “Highly Commended” Honours in the Enterprising Young Brits Awards – Chancellor Gordon Brown leads ceremonies recognizing young entrepreneurs

London – Blue Ventures Founder and Director of Science Alasdair Harris yesterday received the “Highly Commended” award from the Enterprising Young Brits competition which recognizes young entrepreneurs who have turned their ideas into successful businesses.

Harris, who was selected from more than 1,000 entries across the UK, won the award for social and environmental ventures that combine the principles of a successful business with an emphasis on social and community benefits.

Blue Ventures’ Volunteer Launches International Letter Exchange Programme Between Students in United States and Madagascar

Blue Ventures volunteer Gabrielle Johnson has initiated a letter exchange programme between her students at the Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara, California, and the students at Ecole Sainte Famille school in Andavadaoaka, Madagascar.

The letter exchange is part of Blue Ventures’ ongoing educational projects that have been launched in Andavadoaka, home of Blue Ventures conservation research site.

Blue Ventures Discusses Community Conservation at World Youth Congress in Scotland

Blue Ventures team members Richard Nimmo and Kit Gillibrand presented a workshop on community conservation in Madagascar during the World Youth Congress held in Scotland.

The workshop discussed the conservation projects that Blue Ventures has developed in Madagascar and explored how other organisations and countries could benefit from lessons learned by Blue Venture’s partnerships.

Hundreds Turn Out to Take Advantage of Large Octopus Catches During Reopening of Andavadoaka’s First Community-run Octopus No-take Zone

Between 700 to 1,000 people, traveling in more than 130 pirogue canoes, descended on Nosy Fasy island today during the reopening of the region’s first community-run no-take zone (NTZ).

While final data of the number of octopus caught by villagers has not yet been fully analysed, anecdotal evidence suggests the catches were generally larger than before the NTZ was implemented, and villagers expresses great satisfaction with the day’s fishing results.

The importance of protecting the environment and its resources is a fundamental aspect of Blue Ventures’ work. On the 5th June, World Environment Day 2005, Blue Ventures hosted a ‘Beach Clean-up’ competition for the children of Andavadoaka village.

Blue Ventures and partner shortlisted for SEED Awards

Blue Ventures’ collaborative research project with Madagascar’s Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IHSM), has been selected as one of twelve finalists of the SEED Awards, an international contest to find the most promising, innovative and entrepreneurial partnerships for sustainable development

The announcement of the finalists was made by Achim Steiner, Director General of the World Conservation Union (IUCN ), and Ian Johnson, Vice President of the World Bank, at a reception with government ministers from across the world attending the IUCN World Congress in Bangkok.
