We are delighted to announce that Tahiry Honko – the world’s largest community-led mangrove carbon conservation project – has won the 2021 IUCN Pathfinder Award in the climate change category. This award recognises outstanding projects working to protect and conserve nature while contributing to improving human health, conservation, technology, land management and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Run by the Velondriake Association and co-managed by Blue Ventures, Tahiry Honko aims to tackle climate breakdown while bringing sustainable economic benefits to local people. The project empowers communities through the establishment of payment for ecosystem services schemes that offer a long-term and sustainable way for communities to finance the protection of their mangrove forests.
Through the sale of carbon credits, communities are incentivised to reduce deforestation and degradation and contribute to restoring their mangrove forests. This not only protects important habitats instrumental in the mitigation of rising carbon emissions but also protects the valuable carbon already stored in their biomass and sediments.
Money from the sale of carbon credits also helps communities to promote the development of rural infrastructure that contributes to improving education and health services. The impact of this work is far-reaching, with all members of the community benefitting from the collective protection of these forests. “This award is a testament to seven years of hard work by the Velondriake association and will go a long way to helping tackle climate breakdown and build community resilience by preserving and restoring mangrove forests in southwest Madagascar,” said David Parreño Duque, Blue Ventures’ field programmes support manager.
Winning this award highlights the growing recognition for nature-based solutions to mitigating climate change. Ocean habitats offer an invaluable opportunity to tackle the ever-growing climate emergency, and thanks to this award, the success of community led stewardship is being brought to an international stage.
